Women's track second out of nine teams at USM Invitational

GORHAM, Maine -- Without the services of runners who competed at Boston University the day before, the Bates women's track and field team won five events and placed second out of nine teams Saturday at the USM Invitational.

Bates scored 169 points in the meet, second by 15.4 points to the host Huskies (184.4). Assumption College placed third with 91, followed by Smith (90.4) and Southern New Hampshire (54.5).

Top-three performances and other highlights for the Bobcats included:

  • Sophomore Katherine Cook (South Burlington, Vt.) won the mile for the second meet in a row, in 5:19.24.
  • Senior captain Elena Schroeder (Clinton, Conn.) won the 600-meter run in 1:43.96.
  • Sophomore Julia Nemy (San Francisco, Calif.) won the 800 meters in 2:25.66.
  • First-year Shelby Burns (Uniontown, Pa.) took first place in the high jump, clearing 1.53 meters in the finals. 
  • Sophomore Sally Ceesay (Bronx, N.Y.) won the triple jump with a top distance of 10.68 meters. Junior Elyse Rubchinuk (Newport, N.H.) was third (10.01) and senior Carolyn Benner (Eddington, Maine) was fourth (9.60).
  • First-year Yeymi Rivas (Richmond, Calif.) placed second in the 400 meters in 1:02.74.
  • Senior Katharine Wick (Hillsborough, Calif.) took second place in the pole vault (3.25 meters).
  • First-years Katie Barker (Burlington, Vt.) and Wendy Memishian (Medway, Mass.) placed second (3:06.39) and third (3:08.97), respectively, in the 1,000 meters.
  • Sophomore Mary Szatkowski (Buxton, Maine) placed third in the 3,000 meters in 11:07.35, while senior Julia Fisher (Philadelphia, Pa.) was fifth (11:13.57) and sophomore Rachael Rosow (Avon, Conn.) was sixth (11:17.71).
  • Sophomores Charlotte Cutshall (Falmouth, Maine) and Lindsey Beauregard (Hollis, N.H.) were third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump at 4.77 and 4.75 meters.
  • Sophomore Srishti Sunil (Bangalore, India) tied for fourth in the high jump (1.48 meters).
  • First-year Katie Hughes (Pittsfield, Maine) took fifth place in both the shot put (10.99 meters) and the weight throw (13.08).
  • First-year Sarah Shoulta (Waterville, Maine) was fifth in the 55 hurdles (9.19 seconds).

Bates will defend its title in the Maine State Meet next Friday at Bowdoin, starting at 6pm.
