LEWISTON, Maine - The Bates softball team out-hit Bowdoin College, but ultimately dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Bowdoin College, falling 4-1 in game one and 5-2 in game two, on Tuesday afternoon at Lafayette Street Field in NESCAC action. The games were relocated to Bates because of Bowdoin's unplayable field, and Bowdoin served as the home team.
The Bobcats (1-12, 0-7 NESCAC) collected 15 hits to Bowdoin's (14-5, 3-0 NESCAC) 12 in the two games, but lacked the clutch hit, leaving 17 total players on base in the two games.
Bates returns to non-conference action on Wednesday when the team travels to the University of New England for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Game One Recap - Bowdoin 4, Bates 1
Junior Brenna Callahan (Milton, Mass.) threw a complete game for Bates, who were visitors for both games, as Bowdoin's field in Brunswick is not yet ready for play. Callahan allowed four hits and four runs in six innings while striking out one, and allowed only one run over the first four innings.
Julia Geaumont (7-2) picked up the win for Bowdoin, striking out six while scattering seven hits over seven innings and allowing one earned run. Geaumont helped her own cause in the bottom of the first, hitting a two-out home run over the left field fence to give herself the early 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats threatened in second inning, with Kira Shaikh (Manchester, Conn.) beating out a bunt to the pitcher to start things off. First-year Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) hit a one-out single to right, putting runners on first and second with one out. But Geaumont retired the next two batters to end the threat.
Bowdoin added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI double from Adriane Krul that scored Claire McCarthy and Lauren O'Shea. The Bobcats got on the board in the sixth off the bat of Freedman, who doubled to left, scoring first-year Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.).
Schiller had the only multi-hit game for Bates in game one, going 2-4 with a run scored. Geaumont had the only multi-hit game for Bowdoin, with a 2-3 performance and an RBI.
Game Two Recap - Bowdoin 5, Bates 3
Senior Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) tossed the complete game for Bates, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out a pair in six innings of work.
Emily Griffin threw all seven innings for Bowdoin, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out nine.
The Polar Bears took the early lead in the nightcap when senior Adriane Krul doubled to center, stole third, and came home when Emily Griffin grounded out to second, giving Bowdoin the 1-0 lead after one inning.
The Bobcats threatened to even the score in the top of the third, as sophomores Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) and Jenney Abbott (Rangeley, Maine) started the frame with back-to-back singles. Griffin retired the next two batters before issuing a walk to junior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.), but the sophomore hurler was able to strike out Freedman to keep the Polar Bears ahead.
Freedman held Bowdoin scoreless in the second and third, but sophomore Marissa O'Toole added to the Polar Bear's lead when she knocked a two run homer to right center field to give Bowdoin the 3-0 advantage after four innings. Bowdoin added a pair of runs in the bottom of five on a pinch-hit RBI double from Alana Luzzio and an RBI single from Geaumont.
Bates mounted a substantial threat in the top of the sixth when senior Kira Shaikh started the frame with a single to right field. Paige Ahlholm drew a walk and Inlow laced a single up the middle to score Shaikh. Abbott connected on her second single of the day to load the bases, but once again Geaumont induced the next two batters to fly out, leaving the bags full of Bobcats.
Bates added another run in the seventh, scoring a run on an RBI single from first-year Victoria Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) Kira Shaikh, Maddie Inlow, and Jenney Abbott each had two hits for Bates, with Inlow and Fitzgerald picking up RBI's.
Adriane Krul and Marisa O'Toole each had two hits for Bowdoin in game two.
