LEWISTON, Maine - Emma Schiller and Kira Shaikh each had multi-hit days for the Bates softball team, but the Bobcats ran into a hot-hitting team in the University of Southern Maine, dropping a snowy double-header, 10-1 and 16-3 Monday afternoon at Lafayette Street Field in non-conference action.
USM first-year catcher Courtney Davis had six hits, a pair of home runs, and 11 RBI's in two games on the afternoon, as the Huskies (13-7) totaled 24 hits and 26 runs in the five-inning victories over the Bobcats (1-10).
Kira Shaikh (Manchester, Conn.) hit the first home-run of the season for the Bobcats, going 2-3 with the two-run shot in the first inning of game one.
Bates is scheduled to return to action on April 7 in Lewiston with a double-header against Bowdoin College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Game One Recap - USM 10, Bates 1 (5 innings)
First-year Erika Millett struck out six batters in a complete game for USM, and five different players recorded multi-hit games as the Huskies beat Bates 10-1 in game one.
Four different players recorded hits for Bates, led by senior Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine), who was 1-2 with an RBI. Freedman took the mound for the Bobcats, striking out seven in five innings.
The Huskies got on the board in the top of the first with three runs, highlighted by a two-run single up the middle off the bat of Davis. The Bobcats got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first, when Freedman doubled to left center, bringing home Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.), who reached base on an infield single.
USM added a pair of runs in the top of the second, with Mary Caron notching a one-out double to right field. Davis followed with a triple for her third RBI in two innings, and eventually came home to score on a fielder's choice from Kristen Duross. The Huskies added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, and three in the top of the fifth, again highlighted by a a bases-loaded single from Davis.
Lockhart, Freedman, Shaikh and sophomore Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) each recorded a hit in game one for Bates. Mary Caron and Davis each had three hits for USM, as Davis went 3-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored, while Caron was 3-3 with four runs scored and a walk. Taylor Lux, Amber Kelly, and Emily York each recorded two hits for the Huskies.
Game Two Recap - USM 16, Bates 3 (5 innings)
Senior Bates pitcher Brenna Callahan (Milton, Mass.) kept the USM bats quiet in the top of the first inning and the Bobcats scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first to take the early 3-0 lead.
First-year Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.) started the inning with a sharp single to left field, and came home on a double off the bat of Freedman to give Bates their first lead of the day. Kira Shaikh followed with an opposite field home run, the first of the year for Shaikh and the Bobcats, to drive home Freedman.
USM got a pair of runs back in the second, and added two more in the third, when Davis hit her first home run of the day, an opposite field shot to right-center field that brought home Caron. One inning later, Davis again homered to right center field, but this time with two-teammates on board to give USM a 7-3 lead.
The Huskies then erupted for nine runs on six hits in the top of the fifth, this time highlighted by a three-run shot off the bat of sophomore Emily York.
Schiller and Shaikh each had two hits for the Bobcats, while Lockhart, Freedman, and Inlow all recorded a hit for Bates. Callahan threw five innings for Bates, striking out five.
Davis was 3-4 with six RBI's and three runs scored. Lux, Caron, and York each recorded multi-hit games for USM. First-year Amber Kelly picked up the win for the Huskies, striking out six and scattering three runs on eight hits.
