LEWISTON, Maine - Brenna Callahan threw a two-hit shutout and Kelsey Freedman followed with a one-hit shutout, as the Bates College softball team defeated visiting Thomas College in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Lafayette St. Field. Bates won the first game, 1-0 and erupted for 12 hits to win game two, 13-0 on senior day.

Bates (14-20) completed the season with a 9-2 record over the final eleven games and the most wins in a season since the 2012 squad posted 18 victories. Thomas College (12-21) will conclude the regular season on April 29 with two games at Johnson State.

The win gives senior Bobcat pitcher Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) her most wins in a season (10) leaving Bates as the career leader in strikeouts. Freedman also holds the record for strikeouts in a season and strikeouts in a game (17). Senior pitcher Callahan (Milton, Mass.) finished the season with a career best in wins for a season (4), and fellow senior Kira Shaikh (Manchester, Conn.) added five more stolen bases for the afternoon, giving her 23 on the season, which ranks second in the record books.

Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) provided all the offense her team would need with a home run in game one, while four players had multi-hit games for the Bobcats in game two, led by a 4-4 performance from Shaikh and a career-high four RBIs from Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.).

Game one Bates 1, Thomas 0

Game one was a pitcher's dual as both Callahan and Thomas pitcher Sonja Morse limited opposing hitters to only two hits. Callahan struck out eight and walked three while Morse struck out nine and also walked three. Korien Laren and Jordan Agger-Barnes each had one hit for Thomas, while Lockhart and Shaikh each had one hit for Bates.

Callahan struck out the side in the top of the first for Bates, and Lockhart blasted a home run in the bottom of the frame, her third of the season, to give the Bobcats the only offense they would need.

The Terriers got to Callahan for the first hit of the game in the top of the fourth when Lorien hit a once-out single to center field. Agger-Barnes followed with a single through the left side to put runners on first and second. Taylor M. Johnson hit a fielder's choice to shortstop Maddie Inlow, who threw the lead runner Lorien out at third. Callahan struck out Emily McKenney to end the inning.

Game two Bates 13, Thomas 0 (5 innings)

The Bobcats used a pair of six-run innings and a career day from Schiller to take the night cap. Schiller was 2-3 with four RBIs while teammate Shaikh was a perfect 4-4 with two RBIs and four stolen bases.

Bates once again scored early in the nightcap, as Shaikh started the first frame with a single through the right side. She stole second and took third on a throwing error, eventually scoring on a Freedman single to right.

The Bobcats erupted for six runs on six hits in the third, sending 11 batters to the plate. Shaikh, who recorded two hits in the inning, started the frame with a base hit, stole second, and came around to score on a Lockhart single. Freedman followed with the RBI single to give Bates the 3-0 lead.

The Bobcats scored two runs on a pair of Thomas errors, and Schiller came through with a two-out single up the middle to bring home two more runs giving Bates a 6-0 advantage. Shaikh followed with an RBI single.

Alyssa Eugley broke up Freedman's bid for a no-hitter in the top of the fourth when she ripped a one out single to center field.

Bates added six more runs on four hits in the fourth, highlighted by a Schiller double to left field that scored a pair of runs. Freedman retired consecutive batters in the seventh to end the game.

Lockhart was 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Freedman continued her hot hitting with a 2-3 performance and two RBIs. Callahan and Marina Barsoum (Newark, N.J.) also added a hit, and Barsoum added an RBI. Three different pitchers took the mound for the Terriers in the first game. Faith Robinson started the game and threw three innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits to take the loss.
