FARMINGTON, Maine - The Bates softball team concluded a six-game weekend with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine Farmington Sunday afternoon in non-conference action, winning game one 6-3, and game two,13-3. The Bobcats concluded the weekend with a 5-1 record, with the only loss coming at the hands of NESCAC opponent Colby College on Sunday morning, 8-2.
The Bobcats (12-20, 4-8 NESCAC) pounded out ten hits in game one led by multi-hit performances from Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) and three stolen bases from Kira Shaikh (Manchester, Conn.). Brenna Callahan (Milton, Mass.) threw seven innings, limiting Me-Farmington (4-20) to four hits to net the win in game one.
In game two, Bates knocked out 13 hits including home runs from Lockhart and Callahan and multi-hit games from Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.) and Victoria Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.). Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) allowed three runs on five hits while striking out 11 batters to pick win number eight on the season.
Bates concludes the season on April 28 when the team hosts a doubleheader against Thomas College at Lafayette Street Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Game one, Bates 6, Me-Farmington 3
Bates jumped on starter Courtney Fowler in the first inning of game one, as Shaikh was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole her first of three bases in game one, and came around to score on an RBI single from Lockhart to give Bobcat starter Callahan a 1-0 lead.
Me-Farmington took the lead in the bottom of the second courtesy of an RBI triple from Hannah Lust who came home on a fielder's choice from Margaret Fogarty to put the Beavers ahead, 2-1. The Bobcats regained the lead in the top of the third, helped by two Farmington errors and an RBI single from Inlow to give Bates the 3-2 lead.
Bates added two insurance runs in the fourth highlighted by back to back RBI singles from Lockhart and Freedman to give Callahan a 5-3 advantage, which is all she would need to record her second win of the week.
Lockhart was 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Inlow was 2-3 with one RBI. Freedman was 1-4 with two runs and Shaikh was 1-2 and crossed the plate three times while driving in a run. Callahan allowed three runs, two earned, while striking out three as she notched her third win of the season.
Natasha DeRoche recorded the lone multi-hit game for the Beavers, going 2-3 with a run scored. Beaver pitcher Fowler went seven innings, allowing six runs, but only one earned, while striking out seven.
Game two, Bates 13, Me-Farmington 3
The Bobcats scored six runs in the first two innings off of Me-Farmington starter Emily Vitone, who gave up seven runs on eight hits in two plus innings of work.
Bates scored three runs on four hits in the first inning, as Shaikh led the game off with a triple to right field and came home on a Lockhart single down the left field line. Jenney Abbott (Rangeley, Maine) drove home two more runs with a single to left field that gave her team the 3-0 lead.
Lockhart drove in two more runs in the top of the third when she smashed her second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence. Inlow added an RBI single to right that to give Bates the 6-0 lead.
The Beavers put up a three-spot in the bottom of the third on two hits, as Kiana Thompson came up with the key hit, a single to right field that scored two runs. The Bobcats put the game away in the top of the seventh with five runs on four hits. Callahan led off with her second home run of the season, as the Bobcats sent nine batters to the plate.
Lockhart was 2-2 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Maria Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) and Schiller also had two hits. Schiller and Freedman each added two RBIs for the Bobcats. Shaikh added two more stolen bases and scored three runs in the win.
Lust had the lone multi-hit game for the Beavers, and Thompson added two RBIs for Farmington.
