BRUNSWICK, Maine - Kira Shaikh recorded the lone hit for the Bates softball team, as the Bobcats fell 13-0 in five innings to No. 1 Tufts University in the series finale at Bowdoin College Sunday morning. Tufts was the home team in a game that was postponed from March 28 and April 5.
First-year Raina Galbiati notched the first win of her career for Tufts (26-0, 8-0 NESCAC), allowing only one hit in five innings while striking out two, as the Jumbos scored 13 runs on 13 hits. Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) pitched the first inning for Bates (3-17, 1-7), and Brenna Callahan (Milton, Mass.) threw the final three frames for the Bobcats.
Shaikh (Manchester, Conn.) raised her season average to a team-leading .434 with a two-out single to right field in the top of the fourth. She advanced to second on a passed ball, but that was the only runner the Bobcats had in the game.
Freedman struck out lead-off batter Carrie Copacino looking in the bottom of the first, but the Jumbos scored six runs on seven straight hits for the 6-0 lead after one. Tufts added seven more runs in the bottom of the second highlighted by singles from Christia Raso and Bria Keenan that each scored two runs.
The Bobcats turned in some stellar defense in the third and fourth innings to keep the Jumbos from adding to the lead. First-year Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.) made a diving catch in center field with two runners on to end the third inning, while sophomore Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) snagged a line drive at short and threw to first to get the double-play to end the fourth inning threat from Tufts.
Bri Keenan, Raven Fournier, Gracie Marshall and Raina Galbiati each had multi-hit games for Tufts, and Galbaiati had a game-high three RBIs.
The Bobcats return to action on Monday, April 20 with a double-header against Fisher College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
