Softball bangs out nine hits in loss to Bethany

CLERMONT, Fla. - Victoria Fitzgerald and Kira Shaikh each recorded two hits and Maddie Inlow scored two runs as Bates softball fell 11-5 to Bethany College (West Virginia) in Friday's second game at the National Training Center Tournament.

Bethany (7-5) opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top half of the first inning, but Bates (0-4) tied things up in the bottom of the second. Shaikh (Manchester, Conn.) doubled to center field, bringing home Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) who reached on a fielder's choice for Bates' first run of the game. First-year Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) followed with a single up the middle to bring home Inlow and tie the game.

Bates took the lead an inning later when first-year Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass) legged out an infield single and scored two batters later on a Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) single. Inflow reached on a fielding error and Shaikh followed with her second knock to center field and her second RBI of the game. Inlow scored the final run of the inning when a throw down to second base to catch the stealing Shaikh sailed wide.

The Bison responded with five runs on five hits in their half of the fourth, and tacked on three more tallies in the fifth.

Brennan Callahan struck out five and didn't walk anybody in 4.2 innings of work, while teammate Kelsey Freedman came in to pitch the final 2.1 innings for the Bobcats. Schiller, junior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.), Freedman, and Ahlholm each recorded hits for Bates .

The Bobcats play again Saturday afternoon, beginning with action against Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m., followed by a contest with Bethel (Minn.) at 3:00 p.m.
