REDLANDS, Calif. -- The Bates women's lacrosse team ran out to a 9-1 lead en route to a 16-11 season-opening victory at the University of Redlands its 2015 season on Wednesday.
Juniors Moriah Greenstein (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Emma Brinkman (Rye, N.Y.) scored two goals apiece as the Bobcats (1-0) built an eight-goal advantage in the game's first 23 minutes. Greenstein finished with a game-high five points with three goals and two assists, while Brinkman also tallied three goals. First-year Annie Duke (Englewood, Colo.) added two goals and two assists; junior Emma Noto (Portland, Ore.) also scored twice, while senior Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) and junior Kelan McCann (Shrewsbury, Mass.) both finished with one goal and one assist.
The host Bulldogs (0-1), who finished 14-5 last year and won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, received five goals from Dulce Moll and four more from Stephanie Garrett.
First-year Camille Belletete (Jaffrey, N.H.) scored the first goal of the season unassisted two minutes into the game. Redlands' Lacey Bjorndal evened the game 80 seconds later on a free-position shot, but with 24:41 to go in the half, Brinkman scored unassisted to put the Bobcats in the lead for good. Brinkman made it 3-1 with 22:45 to go with an assist from Duke.
Greenstein scored back-to-back goals, first on a McCann assist and second on an 8-meter shot with 18:26 to play. Sixteen seconds later, Greenstein fed Duke for the first-year's first collegiate tally and a 6-1 Bates lead. Bates made it 9-1 with successive goals by sophomore Sydney Cowles (Wayne, Pa.), senior captain Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) and junior Alex Briody (North Kingstown, R.I.) on a Duke assist.
Redlands cut into the lead with consecutive goals by Stephanie Garrett and Dulce Moll, before Greenstein fed Brinkman for a last-minute tally, giving the Bobcats a 10-3 lead at the half.
The Bobcats raised their lead to a game-high 15-6 margin with 13:27 to play, as Getsinger assisted a McCann tally, before the Beavers finished out the game with five of the final six goals, closing the final margin to 16-11.
Junior goalkeeper Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) had nine saves and allowed nine goals in 57 minutes. Senior Jill Conway (Andover, Mass.) played the final 2:49 and made one save while allowing three scores.
Belletete led Bates with five draw controls.
Bates next plays at Amherst College on Feb. 28 in the team's NESCAC opener.
