BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Lucas Hausman tied the school record with 44 points as Bowdoin dealt the Bates men's basketball team its worst loss since 2010, 98-70, on Friday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears improve to 16-6 (6-3 NESCAC) with their most lopsided win over the Bobcats since 2008. The Bobcats, who entered the game as the top-ranked team in the NCAA New England Regional rankings, fall to 17-5 (6-3). Bowdoin's win moved the Polar Bears into a four-way tie for second place in the NESCAC with Bates, Amherst and Tufts, all at 6-3.

Hausman enjoyed one of the finest performances in school history, connecting on 20-25 shots from the field, including a perfect 4-4 from three point range. He is the sixth Bowdoin player to surpass 40 points in a game and tied the school mark set by Bill Fraser, against Bates, in 1954.

He was one of four Polar Bears in double digits as the squad scored a season-high 98 points. Bryan Hurley notched 15 points and dealt 12 assists to go with three steals. John Swords had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks while Matt Palecki added 12 points and six caroms.

Bates was led by 11 points off the bench from senior Adam Philpott (Gloucester, Mass.). Junior Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) and senior Billy Selmon (Atlanta, Ga.) had 10 points apiece for the Bobcats. Senior Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine) handed out eight assists but was held to five points.

Hausman was red hot in the opening period, sparking Bowdoin to a 15-point halftime lead. The junior guard knocked down 9 of his 11 shots in the period and Hurley added a trio of three-pointers to spark the Polar Bears. The Bobcats stayed within shouting distance thanks to seven 3-pointers, including three from Selmon, and the Polar Bears carried a 48-33 edge into the break.

After sophomore Marcus Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) hit a free throw to open the second period for Bates, Bowdoin quickly put all thoughts of a comeback to rest with a 11-1 surge, pushing the lead to 59-34 with under 16 minutes to go. Bates would get no closer than 20 points for the remainder of the contest.

Bowdoin's offense was clicking on all cylinders as the Polar Bears shot a piping hot 63.5% from the field in the game (40-63), including 66.7% from three-point range (12-18). Bates connected on 36.8% of its shots (21-57) for the contest and hit on 13 three-pointers (13-34). Bowdoin owned a 37-29 edge in rebounding for the game.

Both teams will play against Saturday with NESCAC postseason seeding at stake. The Polar Bears will host Tufts at 2:00 p.m. while the Bobcats will travel to play at Colby at 3:00 p.m.
