Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine – Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Morgosh made six saves, but Bates College women's soccer fell to No. 19 Bowdoin College, 1-0, as junior Kiersten Turner scored in the 27th minute on Wednesday afternoon at Pickard Field.
The Bobcats (3-2-0, 1-2-0 NESCAC) made a late push to find an equalizer, but the defense of the Polar Bears (3-0-0, 3-0-0 NESCAC) kept the visitors off the board, and Turner's first half tally stood up as the game-winner.
On the game's scoring play, senior Abby Einwag sent a lofted ball to the edge of the box with Turner turning onto the service and heading towards the goal. She then beat a defender and fired a shot to the top right corner of the net.
Bates threatened in the 86th minute as a free kick from junior Caitrin Griffin (Geneva, Ill.) from just inside of midfield made its way to first-year Julia Rosen (Springfield, Ill.). Rosen could not get off an attempt, but an ensuing shot from junior Julia Rice (Providence, R.I.) required a save.
Bowdoin junior goalie Bridget McCarthy (3-0-0) made five saves in the shutout win while Morgosh (Carlsbad, Calif.) stopped six of the seven shots on goal she faced in the loss (3-1-0).
The Polar Bears mounted an attack early in the second half as the hosts registered five shots and a corner kick between the 49th and 57th minutes. Senior Amanda Kinneston notched three shots during the time span, sending one attempt wide after a corner and another high from inside the box.
The Bobcats stymied a pair of Polar Bear chances later in the period as the Bates defense cleared a dangerous corner in the 74th minute, and Morgosh saved a Turner shot four minutes later. Bates responded with a shot from Rosen in the 80th minute, beginning their final effort to tie the game.
The hosts topped the Bobcats in shots (18-7) and corner kicks (6-0) while just edging the visitors in shots on goal (7-5).
