DELAWARE, Ohio -- Bates senior Kallie Nixon achieved her objective in the preliminary heats of the 3,000-meter steeplechase Thursday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, qualifying for Saturday's final.

Nixon (Medfield, Mass.) ensured her spot in the final by placing among the top five in the first of two preliminary heats (the top five in both heats automatically advance, followed by the next four fastest times). Nixon was third in her heat with a time of 10:50.67, which turned out to be the sixth-fastest among 22 runners in the field overall. She is seeded fourth in the event, based on her season-best time of 10:37.87, which earned first place at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships on May 1.

The team captain, who was named Bates' Female Athlete of the Year last Sunday, will run for the final time in a Bates uniform in Saturday's final, which starts at 1pm at Ohio Wesleyan University. A top-eight finish would give her a third career All-America honor.
