Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Bates College softball beat Oswego State 8-4 and lost to Western New England University 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in the National Training Center Spring Games at Hancock Park.
In their final day of action in Florida, the Bobcats (2-4) defeated the Lakers (1-3) in their first game of the day before dropping a 4-0 decision to WNEU on Opening Day for the Golden Bears (1-1).
Next, Bates is tentatively scheduled to host Maine Maritime in a doubleheader on Mar. 22 beginning at noon.
Game One Recap – Bates 8, Oswego State 4
Junior Brenna Callahan (Milton, Mass.) pitched a complete-game seven innings and struck out two as Bates downed Oswego State, 8-4, in their first game of the day.
Junior Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) went 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored while sophomore Melissa Paione (Auburn, Maine) enjoyed a 3-for-4 effort with 5 RBIs and a home run, and first-year Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) notched a 2-for-4 performance.
Oswego State starting pitcher Jessie Terrano allowed three runs over 2.1 innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Reliever Alexandria Connelly picked up the loss while giving up five runs over 3.2 innings.
After Oswego State captured a 3-0 lead after two innings, the Bobcats responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3. Sophomore Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) led off the inning with a home run to right field, and with the bases loaded later in the frame, Paione singled to center field to bring in a pair of runs.
The Bobcats tacked on another three runs in the bottom of the fourth to gain a 6-3 lead. Inlow posted an RBI single in the inning before Paione plated a pair of runs with a double to left field.
Bates added another run in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single from sophomore Alex Eliopoulos (Akron, Ohio) and pushed its advantage to 8-3 in the sixth off a solo shot from Paione. The Lakers scored once in the top of the seventh but could not complete the rally.
Game Two Recap – Western New England 4, Bates 0
Western New England's Heidi Grieger held the Bobcats to two hits over a complete-game seven innings as WNEU topped Bates, 4-0, in the second contest of the day for both teams.
Freedman threw all six innings for the Bobcats striking out six batters and conceding only three earned runs.
For the Golden Bears, Alexis Bukowski recorded two RBIs while Katie Wood and Katie Eckert notched one RBI apiece.
Senior Alayna Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) and Callahan each registered a hit for Bates, and Paione worked two walks in three plate appearances.
Western New England plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first as Bukowski singled in a run. After scoreless innings in the second, third, and fourth, WNEU tallied another two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Wood brought in a run, and Eckert sent a run home with a sacrifice fly.
The Golden Bears tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth as Bukowski plated another run.
The Bobcats staged their best opportunity to score in the top of the fourth as Paione walked with two outs, and Garbarino followed with a single before the inning concluded.
