Softball tops Becker, falls to Transylvania

CLERMONT, Fla. – Bates College softball picked up its first win of the season with a 9-5 victory over Becker College after falling to Transylvania University 2-0 at the National Training Center Spring Games at Hancock Park on Friday night.

In the team's second day of play in Florida, the Bobcats (1-3) earned their first win under new head coach McKell Barnes against the Hawks (1-9) after dropping their first contest of the day to the Pioneers (5-8).

Next, Bates concludes play at the NTC Spring Games with contests tomorrow against Oswego State (1 p.m.) and Western New England University (3 p.m.).

Game One Recap – Transylvania 2, Bates 0

Junior Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) allowed just one earned run over seven innings, but Jamie Lutes held the Bobcats to just two hits in a complete-game effort as Transylvania beat Bates, 2-0, in the first game of the day for both teams.

Freedman struck out three and gave up only four hits opposite Lutes' five-strikeout shutout.

Sophomore Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double for the Bobcats while Chelsea Meiners and Krista DeBurger each drove in runs for the Pioneers.

Meiners plated Shelby Bailey for the game's first run in the top of the fifth, and Transylvania doubled its lead to 2-0 in the top half of the sixth as Cassie Hamilton came in on DeBurger's sacrifice fly.

For Bates, Lockhart notched a lead-off single in the bottom of the first and recorded her double to right center with two outs in the last half of the sixth inning.

Game Two Recap – Bates 8, Becker 5

Lockhart and first-year Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) each knocked in a pair of runs as Bates beat Becker, 8-5, in its first win of 2014.

Lockhart went 3-for-4 at the plate, Inlow enjoyed a 2-for-3 effort, and sophomore Alex Eliopoulos (Akron, Ohio) charted a 2-for-4 performance as the Bobcats registered nine runs on nine hits.

Junior Brenna Callahan (Milton, Mass.) struck out three and gave up four runs, three earned, in the win, while Freedman struck out six batters in three innings of relief. Kelsey Norberg allowed nine runs, five earned, on nine hits in the complete-game loss.

Becker held a 3-1 lead through four innings before Bates rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-3 edge. Lockhart started the comeback with a one-out triple to center field which plated Callahan and sophomore Melissa Paione (Auburn, Maine).

Junior Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.) followed with a single to right field which brought in Lockhart. Inlow later doubled in Brown, and Eliopoulos knocked in a run with a single.

After the Hawks pulled within 6-5 after the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to push their advantage to 9-5, and Freedman struck out the side in the bottom half of the frame.
