Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Senior Michael Mayer scored a game-high 25 points, pacing four Ephs in double figures, as No. 10 Williams College men's basketball topped Bates College, 92-70, on Friday night inside Chandler Gymnasium.
The Ephs (18-3, 6-1 NESCAC) held just a 49-44 lead at halftime but opened the second half with a 12-0 run to gain separation from the Bobcats (11-10, 1-6 NESCAC).
Mayer (Durham, N.C.) shot 10-of-15 from the floor and also grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Daniel Wohl (La Canada, Calif.) tallied 19 points and eight rebounds, first-year Duncan Robinson (New Castle, N.H.) posted 16 points and six assists, and first-year Mike Greenman (Linwood, N.J.) netted 12 points.
For Bates, sophomore Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) scored a team-high 18 points while junior Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine) recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.
Even play marked the game's opening as neither side could gain a lead larger than two possessions over the contest's first 14 minutes. With the score tied at 26-26 with 8:29 left in the stanza, the Ephs used a 19-8 run over the next six minutes to take a 45-34 lead with 2:38 left in the half.
From there, Boornazian and junior Billy Selmon (Atlanta, Ga.) each hit 3-pointers inside of the final 2:20 to help the Bobcats cut the hosts' advantage to 49-44 at the break.
The Ephs notched the second half's first 12 points to gain a 61-44 edge with 16:55 to play. Boornazian answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 61-50, but Williams responded with a triple of its own to reclaim a 64-50 edge.
The Bobcats trimmed the Ephs' margin to 11 points at 76-65 with 6:29 to play after a 3-pointer from senior Luke Matarazzo (Shelton, Conn.) before Williams capped the game with a 16-5 run.
Williams connected on 38-of-64 shots from the floor (59.4 percent) and 10-of-25 from 3-point distance (40.0 percent). Bates sank 26-of-65 shots from the field (40.0 percent) and 7-of-25 from deep (28.0 percent).
Next, Bates plays at Hamilton tomorrow at 4 p.m. while Williams hosts Tufts tomorrow at 4 p.m.
