LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team took advantage of 18 first-half turnovers by the University of Southern Maine to build a 15-point lead at the break, and the Bobcats held off the Huskies in the second half for a 56-47 non-conference win Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.

The win puts Bates at 4-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Sophomore brothers Marcus and Malcolm Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) both notched double-doubles in the game and tied for the team lead with 12 points apiece. Malcolm added 12 rebounds and two blocked shots, while Marcus grabbed 10 boards.

Junior Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) pitched in with 11 points and senior Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine) added 10 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. Bates received all but three of its points from its starting lineup.

Zach Leal scored a game-high 13 points for USM (1-3). Cole Libby added 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Fred Knight added nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

USM settled down in the second half, committing only four turnovers, and the Huskies were able to hang around the rest of the game, coming as close as within five points midway through the period, when Jalen Lincoln's 3-pointer made it 46-41 with 10:32 to go.

Malcolm Delpeche ended a mini-drought by both teams with an offensive putback, and Marcus Delpeche extended it to 50-41 with 6:55 left on a Safford assist. The Huskies missed seven field goal attempts in a row until another three by Lincoln made it 54-47 with 2:34 left, after Marcus Delpeche negated a miss by senior Billy Selmon (Atlanta, Ga.) with a follow-up jam.

With 1:46 left, Libby and Knight missed and Knight fouled Malcolm Delpeche, who sank both of his free throws with 1:26 left to account for the final score at 56-47. The Bobcats couldn't make the Huskies pay for intentionally fouling them, missing their final four free throws, but the Huskies couldn't capitalize either.

The Bobcats held the Huskies to 30.8 percent shooting from the field, including 18.2% from three-point territory. Both teams shot under 50% from the free-throw line in the game: Bates was 8-20 (40%) and USM was 3-7 (42.9%). The Bobcats outrebounded the Huskies 47-44.

Bates next plays at the University of New England on Sunday at 5pm.
