LEWISTON, Maine -- Hayley Hopper and Maddie Kuppe combined for 19 kills and just two attack errors, leading Tufts University to a 3-0 win over the Bates College volleyball team Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Jumbos (8-6, 3-1 NESCAC) won each set by a 25-16 score to capture their third NESCAC victory in four conference matches, all on the road.
Bates (8-7, 0-3 NESCAC) suffered its first home loss of the season in three matches, despite recording one more kill (30) than Tufts (29). The Bobcats were hurt by attack errors, with 19 compared to only seven for the Jumbos.
Chandler McGrath led the Bobcats with 10 kills and zero attack errors, for a .455 hitting percentage. Abby Leberman added six kills while Laryssa Schepel had a team-high 11 digs. Tess Walther and Jacqueline Forney passed out 12 and 11 assists, respectively.
Tufts sophomore Elizabeth Ahrens had a match-high three blocks, while Carolina Berger led the back row with eight digs. Mary Maccabee and Alex Garrett recorded three service aces apiece and Kyra Baum paced the offense with 24 assists.
Tufts built a quick 8-1 lead in the first set behind four aces, one by Baum and three by Garrett. Bates could get no closer than within six points for the rest of the opening stanza.
The Bobcats took an early 3-2 lead in the second set but saw it erased with a 9-2 Tufts run, prompting a Bates timeout. Maccabee had two aces in the streak, while Bates helped the Jumbos' cause with two service errors. Bates closed within 18-13 before Tufts pulled away for a 23-14 lead, with three kills by Hopper during a 4-0 Jumbo run. Tufts attacked at a match-best .435 rate in the second set, while Bates had its most successful offensive set as well at .240.
Tufts never trailed in the third and final set, falling behind 9-4 with the aid of five attack errors. Kuhel set up Hopper for kills on Tufts' final two points of the match.
Bates stays at home Saturday to host NESCAC rival Connecticut College at 2pm. Tufts plays a pair of non-league matches at MIT on Saturday, facing Simmons at 12:30 and MIT at 2:30.
