BANGOR, Maine -- First-year Caroline Andy scored on a Bates corner in the final seconds of the first half, and the Bobcat women's soccer team went on to a 3-1 non-conference victory Wednesday night at Boucher Field.
Bates (7-5) snapped Husson's (8-5) six-game winning streak, and broke a three-game skid of its own. Bates put major pressure on Husson throughout the game, outshooting the Eagles 30-6, with a 20-4 edge in shots on goal, and 5-1 on corner kicks. Eleven Bates players put shots on goal.
The Bobcats got all three of their goals from rookies, led off by late first-half goals by forward Libby Masalsky (Dedham, Mass.) and the midfielder Andy (Concord, N.H.) -- the first collegiate score for both players, scored just 95 seconds apart from one another. Malasky scored with 1:35 left in the period when the ball caromed to her and she sent in a low shot to beat Eagles goalkeeper Anna Wolterbeek. Then in the final seconds of the half, on a Malasky corner kick, Andy scored amid a scramble in front of the Husson net.
Husson got on the board and closed the deficit to one when Leah Hibbad scored in the 60th minute. Any momentum was short-lived, however, when first-year forward Julia Rosen (Springfield, Ill.) scored just 45 seconds later to regain the two-goal lead at 3-1. Rosen dribbled left and shot across the mouth of the goal into the corner.
Bates has reached seven wins for the first time since 2006, when the Bobcats finished 10-5. The team plays its third straight road game this Saturday at NESCAC rival Middlebury (12pm).
First-year Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) earned the victory in goal for Bates, making three saves. Wolterbeek racked up 17 saves in the loss for Husson.
