LEWISTON, Maine – First-year Julia Smachlo gained CollegeSwimming.com Women's Division III Swimmer of the Week honors as she won four events and helped the women's team win the CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) title over the weekend, the website announced on Tuesday.
On Friday against Bowdoin, the Rexford, N.Y., native won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.10 and emerged victorious in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.57.
The next day in the Colby meet, the Phillips Academy product captured the 500 free again behind a time of 5:11.72 and finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle on the strength of a season-best 10:37.87.
Her efforts aided the women's side in beating the Polar Bears168-130 and the Mules 203-90 as the team captured its first CBB championship since 2011.
Bates takes this weekend off before resuming competition at Connecticut College on Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
