Box Score LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College volleyball took the first set, but Colby-Sawyer College won the next three to earn a 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-21, 25-16) victory as part of the Mid-Coast Classic inside Alumni Gymnasium on Friday night.
The Bobcats (6-8) pulled out the opening set in extra points before the Chargers (10-5) gained control of the match as they hit .375 in set three and .387 in set four.
First-year Chandler McGrath (Seal Beach, Calif.) led the hosts with 10 kills and four block assists while sophomores Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) and Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) contributed eight and seven kills respectively.
On the defensive end, sophomore Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) paced the Bobcats with 22 digs – her fourth match this season with 20 or more digs – and classmate Nicole Cueli (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had 12 digs.
Junior Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season and her second in as many matches with 18 assists and 12 digs while classmate and fellow captain Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) narrowly missed a double-double of her own with 17 assists and nine digs.
For the Chargers, Stephanie Vecchio led all players with 16 kills to go with a .387 hitting percentage. Ally Le-Bruno tallied a match-high 25 digs, and Laura Smolinski dished out a match-best 45 assists.
Leading 24-20 in the first set, Bates allowed Colby-Sawyer to knot the score at 24-24 before Wendel landed a kill and Cueli came directly off the bench to serve up an ace. The Bobcats held a 22-20 lead late in set two, but the Chargers captured the set's last five points to tie the match at one game apiece.
The visitors capitalized on a similar scenario in set three winning five of the set's last six points to turn a 20-20 tie into a 25-21 set win. Colby-Sawyer jumped out to an early edge in set four and held an advantage as large as 18-7 in the final set.
Bates continues play in the Mid-Coast Classic tomorrow in Brunswick, Maine vs. the University of New Brunswick-St. John at 11 a.m. and Brandeis University at 1 p.m.
