For the Cardinals (0-2-2, 0-1-1), Sarah Sylla notched the game's first goal off a corner kick from Katy Hardt just over 37 minutes into the game. Hardt's service fell into the center of the goal area, and Sylla tapped it across the end line and between the posts.
Bates Senior goalkeeper Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) made eight saves in the contest including two in the overtime sessions to help preserve the draw. First-year Jessica Vocaturo (Columbus, N.J.) tallied a game-high five shots while senior captain Julia Rafferty (Reading, Mass.) led all players with three shots on goal – all in overtime.
The Bobcats held advantages in total shots (25-13), shots on goal (13-8), and corner kicks (6-5).
The visitors took seven shots in the first 25 minutes of the second half before Peterson broke through. Bates then took another six shots in the 23 minutes after Peterson's goal but could not crack the Cardinal back line again in regulation.
In the first overtime period, Rafferty placed two shots on goal while sophomore Leah Humes (Beaconsfield, Quebec) also posted a shot on target. The Bobcats earned two corner kicks in the second overtime session, and Rafferty put another shot on frame before the final whistle.
Next weekend, Bates plays two NESCAC games at home – vs. Trinity on Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. and against Amherst on Sept. 29 at noon.
