Men's soccer loses at Conn. College, 2-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Connecticut College men's soccer recorded two goals in a five-minute span in the first half to pick up its first NESCAC win of the season, defeating Bates College 2-0 at Tempel Green on Saturday afternoon.

The Camels (5-2-2, 1-2-2 NESCAC) notched their first tally as Doug Garabedian sent a corner kick into the center of the box which Kevin O'Brien redirected into the back of the net in the 29th minute.

The hosts followed up shortly thereafter as the Bobcats (1-4-2, 0-4-2) conceded a penalty kick at the 32:47 mark. Conn. College's Zach Punt slotted the ball to the right side of Bates goalkeeper Joe Maffly-Kipp (Chapel Hill, N.C.) after the sophomore picked up a yellow card on the penalty-inducing play.

Physical play marked the day as Bates accumulated five yellow cards and 18 fouls while the hosts compiled four yellow cards and 14 fouls of their own.

Conn. College goalkeeper Max Nichols made four saves to record the shutout while Maffly-Kipp stopped six shots in his fourth start of the season.

Senior forward Tyler Grees (Williamstown, Mass.) paced the visitors with three shots, and junior forward Nick Ford (Columbus, Ohio) tallied two shots. For the Camels, O'Brien led all players with five shots, and Pat Devlin added three shots.

The Bobcats trailed the Camels in shots (14-8), shots on goal (8-4), and corner kicks (4-2).

Next, Bates hosts Bowdoin tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. on Russell St. Field in a game rescheduled from Sept. 11.
