LEWISTON, Maine – Bates men's soccer earned a NESCAC point Saturday afternoon, battling Amherst to a scoreless draw.
In a tightly contested, physical match that featured more than 30 combined fouls, neither Bates (4-5-4, 1-4-3 NESCAC) nor Amherst (5-3-4, 1-3-4 NESCAC) could find the back of the net. The Mammoths had two prime scoring opportunities in the first half, both involving senior Mohammed Nuhu. Amherst earned a penalty kick following a Bates foul, but Nuhu's attempt struck the crossbar. Nuhu later had a breakaway opportunity but lost the ball out of bounds.
The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
The physical play continued in the second half, with Amherst's Danny Stanger receiving a red card in the 54th minute after bringing down a Bates player on a breakaway attempt. The Bobcats were unable to capitalize on the free kick. The Mammoths played a man down for the remainder of the match.
First-year goalkeeper
Isaac Kolaczkowski (Beavercreek, Ohio) recorded three saves to secure the shutout for the Bobcats.
Bates will play its final regular-season home game Saturday, Oct. 24, hosting Middlebury on Russell Street Field at 2 p.m. The Bobcats will celebrate their seniors before the match.
