Box Score LEWISTON, Maine – Sophomore Leah Humes scored an equalizing goal in the 83rd minute for Bates College women's soccer in an eventual 1-1 double-overtime draw with Colby College on Wednesday afternoon at Russell St. Field in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Bobcats (4-8-2, 1-7-2 NESCAC) knotted the game at one goal apiece just over 15 minutes after Amelia Barnett scored a goal for the Mules (5-6-3, 1-6-3) in the 68th minute.
On Bates' goal, Humes (Beaconsfield, Quebec) controlled a pass from sophomore Caitrin Griffin (Geneva, Ill.) then carried the ball into an attacking position just outside the penalty area, putting a shot on frame that slipped through the hands of Colby goalkeeper Emily Brook and past the end line.
The visitors tallied the game's opening goal as Annie Papadellis worked a ball into the box which Maddie Tight fed back to Barnett who placed a ball into the left side of the net on a shot from just inside the penalty area.
Bates captured the better of the chances in the overtime periods, outshooting Colby 9-3. In the second extra session, the Bobcats held advantages in shots (6-2), shots on goal (3-0), and corner kicks (2-0).
At the start of the second overtime, the hosts almost broke the tie as sophomore Lily Peterson (Duxbury, Mass.) forced Brook to make a save after a corner kick from classmate Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, Conn.). In the first overtime session, Humes nearly doubled her total, but Brook stymied her attempt in the 99th minute.
Minutes prior to scoring their goal, the Mules threatened the Bobcats' back line as they uncorked three consecutive shots, but Bates blocked the first shot, made a defensive team save on the second shot, and registered a save on the third attempt.
The Bobcats challenged Brook twice in the first half as Peterson advanced on semi-breakaways in the 19th and 40th minutes, but the Colby keeper proved up to the task on both occasions.
Brook finished the game with nine saves while Bates senior goalkeeper Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) stopped three shots.
First-year Hannah Graves (Weston, Mass.) led all players with five shots. She and Peterson each tallied a game-high three shots on goal while Humes notched four shots (two on goal). Tight and Cami Notaro paced Colby with four shots each.
