GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) combined for six hits, five RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Bates College softball team to a pair of wins over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference softball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Towers Field. The Bobcats edged USM 7-6 in the opener and pounded out 17 hits for a 9-2 win in the second game.
With the pair of wins Bates College improves to 11-13 overall. The loss concludes the Huskies' regular season with a record of 6-24.
Holding on to a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bates sophomore Sarah Cullen (Dover, Mass.) entered the game in relief of first-year starter Kristen Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) and earned the save. Cullen faced four batters in the bottom of the seventh, striking out one and allowing one hit.
Saniuk led a 16-hit attack for the Bobcats, finishing the game 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a pair of RBIs. First-years Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Monica Berube (Plaistow, N.H.) each had a pair of RBIs for Bates.
Maciejewski drove in both of her runs in the top of the fifth inning when the Bobcats rallied back from a 4-2 deficit to take the lead. Maciejewski's two-run double to left center field tied the score while Berube drove in the go-ahead run with single.
Bates' Finn earned the win in the circle, allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits. Finn struck out one batter and did not allow a walk. USM's Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss, allowing seven runs (two earned) on 13 hits in 5.2 innings.
In the second game, Saniuk, Maciejewski and junior Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) each connected on three hits as the Bobcats tagged the USM pitching staff for 17 hits and nine runs. Saniuk and Maciejewski each belted out a pair of doubles, while Saniuk had three RBIs.
USM's Sarah Cusack had three of the Huskies' eight hits in the game with a double and two singles, while Lauren DiCecco had a pair of singles.
Cullen earned the win for the Bobcats, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and two walks in seven innings. USM's Sarah Deroche allowed six runs (five earned) in the loss. Deroche yielded nine hits and four walks in 3.1 innings pitched.
Bates visits Husson University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
