WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College men's soccer team's hopes for postseason play were dashed on Friday in a 1-0 setback at Colby College, in both teams' regular-season finales.
Colby (5-7-2, 2-6-1 NESCAC) earns the eighth and final seed in the NESCAC Championship, and will play at top seed Wesleyan on Sunday in the quarterfinals. It is the Mules' first berth in the tournament since it began in 2000. Bates finishes the season 3-9-2 overall and 0-8-1 in conference play, tied with Tufts for ninth place.
Nate Seiberling's early second-half goal stood up as the game-winner in a closely contested match. Only 13 shots were taken between the two teams, seven of them by Colby. Andrew Meisel had his cross get by a Bates player who attempted to head the low cross and Seiberling was there to one-time the ball into the back of the net from about 15 yards.
The rest of the half was full of back-and-forth play and both teams were aggressive. There were 27 fouls in the game, including 17 in the second half.
Bates junior Patrick Jackson (Durham, N.H.) took three of Bates' six shots in the game. Sophomore goalie Greg Watts (West chester, Pa.) made three saves for the Bobcats, while Dan Marden made four for the Mules.
The contest marked the final game for five Bates seniors: forward Rob Friedlander (Hopkinton, N.H.), back Patrick King (Gorham, Maine), back Peter Litwin (Concord, Mass.), forward Jonathan Lobozzo (New Gloucester, Maine) and back Ben Trook (Weston, Mass.).
