Annie Burns '12 made eight saves to help keep the game tied for 85 minutes.

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College and Middlebury College women's soccer teams battled on a rain-soaked muddy Russell Street Field on Saturday morning, with the Panthers edging the Bobcats 1-0 in a NESCAC tilt.

The wet conditions slowed the play of the games at times and affected footing for both teams. Middlebury had more success controlling the ball offensively, outshooting the Bobcats 22-6.

Panther first-year forward Hannah Newman (Merion Station, Pa.) scored the lone goal of the contest in the 85th minute of the play. Middlebury used a corner kick that bounced off several Bobcat and Panther players. Bates sophomore goalie Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) quickly moved out to retrieve the ball, but Newman swiftly deposited the ball to the right side of the goalie and into the net.

Burns notched another strong overall outing in goal, turning back eight shots, including a spectacular save in the 68th minute of the contest off a direct kick at the top of box.

Lauryn Torch (Bronxville, N.Y.) made two saves for the Panthers, both in the first half.

Bates is now 4-8-1 overall and 1-7 in the NESCAC. The Bobcats will host in-state NESCAC rival Colby in their season finale next Friday at 3 p.m.

Middlebury improves to 9-1-2 overall and 7-1 in NESCAC play. The Panthers will host Johnson and Wales on Wednesday.
