Caroline Thomas '09 has 19 goals and 5 assists through six games thus far.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) scored a career-high five goals with one assist to lead the Bates College women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over No. 17 Williams College in a NESCAC matchup Saturday at Campus Avenue Field.

The host Bobcats (3-3, 1-2 NESCAC) never trailed, and defeated the Ephs (2-3, 1-2 NESCAC) for only the second time since 2002 against six losses over that span.

Sophomore Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine), sophmore Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) and first-year Briana Gross (Andover, Mass.) each scored two goals apiece for Bates. Sophomores Avery Pierce (Weston, Mass.) and Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio) added one goal apiece.

Williams seniors Allison Murray (Alexandria, Va.) and Sara duPont (Easton, Md.) both scored twice for the Ephs, who lost their third straight game. Sophomore Tina Nawrocki (Winchester, U.K.), sophomore Alice Nelson (Hanover, N.H.) and first-year Anne Marie Burke (Narberth, Pa.) also scored for Williams.

Bates outshot Williams 38-17, including a 23-7 advantage in shots in the first period, when the Bobcats shot out to a quick 3-0 lead and built an 8-3 lead by halftime. Williams first-year goalie Julia Schreiber (Cockeysville, Md.) made 13 saves, compared to six for Bates first-year goalie Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.).

Radis scored on a free-position shot just 52 seconds into the game. Thomas made it 2-0 less than two minutes later on a feed from senior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.), and she scored again off of the ensuing draw control, again off a dish by Wagner.

DuPont made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal for Williams in the sixth minute, but Thomas followed a free-position goal by Gross with two straight unassisted goals, one at 11:15 and the next at 21:38, to make it 6-1.

Burke scored on an assist by Tracey Ferriter (Larchmont, N.Y.), but Pierce scooped a ground ball in the Bates end and singlehandedly advanced upfield to score unassisted, drawing perhaps the biggest reaction of the day from fans and the Bates bench. Drake followed with a free-position goal, her first score of the season, at the 27:22 mark before Murray closed the gap to 8-3 at the half.

Maciewicz got into the scoring column for the 12th time this season and the first time of the game to open the second half. Three minutes later Murray closed the gap again with an unassisted goal at the 35:54 mark. But Thomas's fifth goal of the game, and her team-high 19th this season, began a run of four unanswered goals by Bates (by Thomas, Maciewicz, Radis and Gross, respectively) that put the game out of the Ephs' reach at 13-4 with under 13 minutes remaining in the game.

Williams made the score closer with three unanswered goals in the final 12 minutes, from duPont, Nelson and Nawrocki.

Bates will host No. 12 Trinity College tomorrow (Sunday) at 12 p.m. in another NESCAC matchup, a makeup game rescheduled from earlier this season. Williams will play host to Middlebury on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
