LEWISTON, Maine -- Trinity College defeated Bates College 10-2 in a five-inning, mercy rule shortened NESCAC East Division softball game Sunday at Lafayette Street Field.

Trinity scored four runs in the first inning, including back-to-back home runs by sophomore Ariana Mullin (Woodbridge, Conn.), a three-run shot, and junior Laura Cutler (Concord, Mass.), all off of Bates junior starting pitcher Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.), who dropped to 4-9 on the season.

Bates plated two runs in the bottom of the first, with an RBI double by sophomore Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) and a run-scoring base hit by sophomore Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.H.). But the Bantams (20-9) added three runs in the third and fifth innings to put the game away.

Trinity sophomore starter Gabrielle Sergi (Walpole, Mass.) held the Bobcats (5-16) to three hits over five innings, raising her record to 7-1 this season.

Mullin went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and four RBIs to lead the Bantams' offense. First-year Jessica Tait (North Salem, N.Y.) went 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Bates first-year Shayna Waldman (Playa del Rey, Calif.) and sophomore Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) came on in relief, throwing 2 and 2 2/3 innings, respectively.

Bates plays a doubleheader at the University of Southern Maine on Monday, starting at 3:30 p.m.
