BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin senior catcher Sarah Stern blasted a two-out grand-slam in the bottom of the seventh to cap a doubleheader sweep of Bates on Sunday, 9-1 and 8-5. The Polar Bears improve to 24-14 (4-7 NESCAC) while the Bobcats fall to 5-15 (3-7).

Bowdoin scored five runs in the second and three times in the fifth to take a 9-1 win. Julia Jacobs was dominant for the Polar Bears, tossing five innings and allowing just a single hit while striking out five. Shavonne Lord delivered the big blow in the second inning with a bases-loaded double that plated three runs for Bowdoin. The Polar Bears scored three times to finish the game in the fifth as Jayme Woogerd hit a two-run triple and Emma Powers scored her with a two-out single to clinch the victory.

In game two, Bates was poised to split the twinbill, entering the seventh inning with a 5-3 lead. Caitlin Murphy (Westwood, Mass.) scored two runs, while fellow senior co-captain Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) drove in two runs to give Bates their late advantage.

Bowdoin's winning rally started with a leadoff triple from Lauren Coven. With one out, Woogerd singled home Coven to trim the lead to one run. Emma Powers and Alison Coleman both reached base with infield hits to load the bases with two away. The very next batter, Stern, cleared the fence and the bases to give Bowdoin the dramatic victory. Jacobs earned the victory in relief with three strong innings in relief.
