Women's basketball rolls at UMaine-Farmington, 93-62

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Junior forward Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) led four players in double figures with 23 points and dished out a career-high six assists as the Bates College women's basketball team rolled past the University of Maine at Farmington 93-62 in non-conference action at Dearborn Gymnasium on Wednesday.

The Bobcats improved to 3-2 and are scheduled to compete in the Bahamas Sunrise Shootout on Dec. 19-20, where they'll face Washington & Jefferson College and Washington (Md.) College. The Beavers slipped to 3-3 and are slated to visit the University of New England on Saturday.

Junior ShawnRose Lanchantin (Natick, Mass.) added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while first-year Brittney French (Auburn, Maine) chipped in with 11 points and sophomore Danielle Schaefers (Barrington, R.I.) pitched in with 10 points. Bates took advantage of 25 Farmington turnovers for 39 points. Bates also dominated in the paint with a 49-27 rebounding advantage and 24 offensive boards for 21 points in the paint.

Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, Maine) led the Beavers with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Brittany York (Strong, Maine) popped in 11 points off the bench -- all in the first half.

The game was tight during the early stages, with a jumper by Ashley Busque (Belgrade, Maine) allowing Farmington to cut the lead to 12-11 at 13:49. But the Bobcats followed with a 15-2 run and held the Beavers without a field goal for a six-minute span to take a 27-13 command. Beckwith posted 16 of her game-high points total in the opening frame as Bates went into intermission with a 48-28 lead.

The Bobcats continued their onslaught into the second half by scoring the first six points of the stanza and proceeding to cruise to the 93-62 victory.

Also pitching in with strong efforts for Bates were senior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.), who dished out nine assists to go with five points and eight rebounds; and sophomore Kellie Goodridge (Merrimack, N.H.), who scored nine points to go with five rebounds and three assists.
