LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College and the University of Southern Maine split a softball doubleheader Monday afternoon, finishing the Bobcats' season. Bates took Game 1 9-3, and the visiting Huskies won Game 2 13-6.

Bates finishes 16-16 overall, the second highest win total in the 31-year history of the program (the 2001 team went 18-13). The Huskies move to 20-19.

In Game 1, the Bobcats hit USM starting pitcher Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine) for nine hits and nine runs, eight earned, in her complete-game, six-inning effort. Riitano unleashed six wild pitches in the game.

Riitano dropped to 0-5, but avenged the loss by hitting her first home run of the season in Game 1, and going yard twice more in Game 2 before getting intentionally walked in her final two plate appearances.

Bates first-year Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) also homered in Game 1, her team-high ninth of the season. Senior Kyla Decato (Paris, Maine) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI, and fellow senior Lissa Moses (Hamden, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Junior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) hit an RBI double and scored.

Junior Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) went the seven-inning distance , allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out three. Masino finishes the season at 14-7.

In Game 2, the Huskies turned the tables, collecting 18 hits combined off of Bates first-year starter Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore reliever Kate Brown (Portland, Maine). Knobel lasted two innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. Brown (1-8) earned the loss in five innings of relief, allowing eight runs, seven earned.

Riitano was 3-for-3 in the game with four RBIs, putting her at 5-for-6 in the two games with five RBIs. USM junior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine) also went deep, her first homer this season, and was 4-for-5 in the game with two doubles, four runs and three RBIs. First-year Shawna Richard (North Waterboro, Maine) went 3-for-4.

Senior Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells, Maine) earned the win, allowing six runs, five earned, over four innings to raise her record to 2-0. First-year Bree Loon (Jay, Maine) threw three shutout innings of dominating relief, allowing just one walk while striking out six in earning the Huskies' first save of the season.

In their final game playing for the Bobcats, Decato went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Moses went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Franklin had a pair of RBIs and scored twice.
