MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Wesleyan University beat the Bates College softball team in both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday, putting the Bobcats back at the .500 mark with a four-game losing streak. The Cardinals won Game 1 by an 8-1 score, and Game 2 by a 7-6 score.
Bates (15-15) concludes its season by hosting the University of Southern Maine Monday in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The Bobcats scored their lone run in the top of the first inning in Game 1. Junior Caitlin Murphy (Westwood, Mass.) hit a leadoff single, stole second base, moved to third on junior Katie Franklin's (New Preston, Conn.) infield single, and scored on a wild pitch by Wesleyan reliever Molly Gaebe (4-10). Graebe went the rest of the way, 6 2/3 innings, for the win after coming on with one out in the first inning, allowing no runs and three hits.
Bates junior Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) dropped to 13-7, giving up six runs, three earned, in 4 2/3 innings.
In Game 2, Wesleyan (13-21) came back from a 6-3 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 7-6 win and the sweep. Sarah Gillooly's bases-loaded single off of sophomore reliever Kate Brown (Portland, Maine) scored Gaebe with the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Brown had come on to face Gillooly in relief of first-year starter Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.), who allowed six earned runs in 6 2/3 innings to drop to 1-3.
Bates scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Murphy drew a bases-loaded walk off of Wesleyan junior starter Dayna Yorks to score sophomore Beth Lakin (Tacoma, Wash.), who had hit a leadoff single. Senior Lissa Moses (Hamden, Conn.) followed with a single to score first-year Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.), who had singled, and Franklin's fielder's choice scored first-year Carola Cassaro (Port Washington, N.Y.). First-year Stacia Saniuk plated Murphy with a sacrifice fly.
