LEWISTON, Maine — Junior Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) pitched all 14 innings, allowing only two unearned runs, as the Bates College softball team swept Bowdoin College in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Lafayette Street Field. The Bobcats won the first game 3-1 and the second game by an 8-1 score.

The Bobcats raised their record to 15-11 overall, 4-2 in the NESCAC East Division, where they moved into second place. With a doubleheader at Trinity scheduled for this Saturday, Bates needs to hold its position to play in the four-team NESCAC Championship.

The Polar Bears dipped to 15-21 overall, 3-5 in the NESCAC East.

Bates junior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) homered in the first game, her fifth of the season, and went 4-for-7 total, with four runs and a pair of RBIs. First-year Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) hit her team-high sixth home run in Game 2 and drove in three runs. Senior Kyla Decato (Paris, Maine) continued her torrid hitting of late, going 5-for-7 in the two games with two runs and three RBIs.

In Game 1, Masino allowed three hits to the Polar Bears, who scored their run in the first inning on senior Danielle Chagnon's (Windsor Locks, Conn.) RBI single, scoring junior Jayme Woogerd (Seattle, Wash.).

Bates scored two in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Franklin hit a leadoff double and came home on Decato's double, and first-year Leah Citrin's (Rye Brook, N.Y.) subsequent double plated Decato. Franklin's homer to left in the sixth inning provided Bates with a two-run cushion.

Bates totalled seven hits off of Bowdoin first-year starter Karen Reni (Simsbury, Conn.), who struck out six batters over her complete-game, six-inning performance while dropping to 10-10 this season.

The Polar Bears opened Game 2 with another first-inning run, when sophomore starting pitcher Brittany Ogden (Maynard, Mass.) reached on an error and came home on an RBI double by senior Megan Rodgers (St. Louis, Mo.). But Bates came back with two runs in the bottom of the first, with an RBI double by Franklin and a run-scoring single by Decato. The Bobcats added three more in the second, highlighted by Saniuk's two-run shot to right, seizing a 5-1 lead.

Masino allowed five hits and walked one in the second game, raising her record to 13-5 and lowering her earned-run average to 3.13.

The Bobcats flashed some leather in the fifth inning, with Franklin making a spectacular catch of Ogden's fly ball near the fence in straightaway center, and senior 2B Lissa Moses (Hamden, Conn.) diving to spear Chagnon's sharp grounder and throwing her out at first.

Bates opened the sixth inning with three straight doubles and five straight hits, adding three more runs to make it 8-1.
