Softball team tops St. Joseph's, loses to Colby in extra innings

WATERVILLE, Maine -- On the second day of the Colby College Softball Tournament, Bates College defeated St. Joseph's 8-5 before losing to the host Mules 2-1 in eight innings.

In the first game, senior Kyla Decato (Paris, Maine) continued her hot hitting of late by going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Junior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) and first-years Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) and Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) also all had two of Bates' 11 hits in the game.

Junior starting pitcher Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) earned the win for Bates with a complete-game performances, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two. Masino raised her record on the season to 11-5.

In the second game of the day, the Bobcats (13-11) received strong pitching from first-year starter Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.), who surrendered one run over 4 1/3 innings, and sophomore reliever Kate Brown (Portland, Maine), who allowed no runs over 3 1/3 innings until Colby scored the game-winner in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Beth Lakin (Tacoma, Wash.) drove in Masino on a double in the second inning for Bates' lone run in the game.

Bates hosts Bowdoin College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, starting at 3:30 p.m.
