Game 2 Box Score (Bates 10, Husson 9)

LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.) drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, completing a 6-for-8 day, as the Bates College softball team swept Husson College in a doubleheader on Monday with a 7-1 win in the first game and 10-9 in the second.

Citrin's single to left field plated senior Kyla Decato (Paris, Maine) with one out in the bottom of the eighth in a close play at the plate, capping a wild second game. The throw from Husson outfielder Carolyn McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) appeared to beat Decato to the plate, but catcher Shawna Bell (Corinth, Maine) was unable to handle the ball as Decato collided into her and scored the game-winner.

Bates junior pitcher Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) won the first game with a complete-game one-hitter, striking out eight and walking four. Bates scored six runs in the first three innings of the game, including a four-run second that was highlighted by one of Citrin's two run-scoring doubles in the game and an RBI triple by junior Caitlin Murphy (Westwood, Mass.). Citrin was 3-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and a run. Junior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) went 2-for-4 in the game with a pair of runs, and first-year Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) hit an RBI double and scored a run.

Bell doubled down the left-field line to score McAvoy, who had walked, in the third inning for Husson's lone run.

Husson sophomore Ashlee Paschal (Jefferson, N.H.) took the loss.

The second game featured five home runs and big comebacks for both sides.

Bates (8-8) took a 6-3 lead with four runs in the fourth inning, including back-to-back homers by Franklin and first-year Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.). Saniuk followed Franklin's two-run shot to straightaway center with a four-base hit to right center, which retied her with Franklin for the team lead in homers with three.

But Husson (4-19) struck back with five runs off of Bates sophomore starter Kate Brown (Portland, Maine) in the sixth inning, all scored with two outs, to seize an 8-6 lead.

McAvoy scored first-year Erin Nason (Unity, Maine) on a single to start off the scoring, and sophomore Jordon Pruett (Manchester, Maine) followed by ripping a two-run double down the left-field line.

First-year shortstop Sabrina Sevigny (Sanford, Maine) stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run homer to center field, her second round-tripper of the game. Bates first-year pitcher Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) came on and induced first-year Lindsay Mitchell (Kenduskeag, Maine) into an inning-ending ground out.

Bates quickly evened the game up in the bottom of the sixth. With two runners on base, Saniuk singled to right to score senior Lissa Moses (Hamden, Conn.) from second, and Decato's fielder's choice scored Franklin from third base to even the game at 8-8.

Husson got a single run in the top of the extra eighth inning with an RBI single to right field by Pruett off of Masino, Bates' third pitcher of the game.

But in the bottom of the eighth, Decato drove in Franklin with a game-tying single to center field, and she advanced to second on an error. Citrin's single sent Decato home to end the game.

Moses hit a solo home run to lead off the third inning for Bates, and was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Franklin was also 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs in the game. Saniuk, too, went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs, while Decato went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Sevigny was 3-for-5 in the game with five RBIs. Pruett went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run, and McAVoy was 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.

Masino earned her second win of the day with her inning of relief, raising her record to 7-4 on the season. First-year Erika Veinote (Hampden, Maine) accepted the loss, pitching a complete game.

Bates has another doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday at home against Thomas College, starting at 3:30 p.m.
