AMHERST, Mass. -- Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) hit a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and the Bates College softball team held on to beat Amherst College 3-2 in the first game of a NESCAC doubleheader on Thursday. Amherst came back with an 8-0 win in the second game for the split at Hill Field.
Franklin's two-out double to left-center scored Caitlin Murphy and Val Beckwith for a 3-1 lead. Amherst scored a run in the bottom of the eighth off of Bates starter Kristin Masino, but Masino struck out the Lord Jeffs' final batter to preserve the win.
Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) gave up only two unearned runs on eight hits and struck out four Jeffs, outdueling Amherst's Miya Warner, who allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out eight Bobcats.
Murphy (Westwood, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs. She singled up the middle in the sixth inning and later scored on a throwing error. Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) was 1-for-3.
The Jeffs (14-6) got revenge in the second game with a mercy-rule five-inning 8-0 decision. Samantha Miller held the Bobcats scoreless on three hits. Bates starter Kate Brown (Portland, Maine) earned the loss, dropping to 1-2.
Bates (6-6) will host Tufts University in a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
