LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College softball team split a doubleheader with UMaine-Farmington Saturday at Lafayette Street Field, winning 9-1 in a shortened five-inning game before getting edged 7-6 in the second game.
In the first game, Bates scored three runs in the first, added four in the third, and ended the game via mercy rule in the fifth by plating two more, putting them ahead 9-1. Junior pitcher Kristin Masino earned the win, allowing one run on six hits and striking out four.
First-year catcher Stacia Saniuk was 3-for-4 at the plate for Bates with a run and an RBI, while junior Katie Franklin went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
In the second game, the Beavers (7-1) scored three runs in the second off of Bates pitcher Kate Brown to go ahead 3-1, then added four in the fifth, powered in part by Erin Porter's two-run double, to answer Saniuk's fourth-inning leadoff home run by extending their lead to 7-3.
Bates scored three runs in the fifth, thanks in part to Lissa Moses' two-run single, to close the gap to 7-6, but UMF first-year pitcher Liz Bergeron, who earned the win in four innings of relief, closed the door by pitching shutout innings in the sixth and seventh.
Bates next plays at Amherst College for a doubleheader on Thursday.
