Bates women roll over Simmons for fourth straight victory, 81-59

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior center Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) scored 17 points as the Bates College women's basketball team rolled to an 81-59 victory over Simmons College in a non-league game Thursday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

Coffin (Westford, Mass.) shot 7-for-10 from the floor and added a game-high 11 rebounds for Bates, as the Bobcats (8-5) won their fourth straight game in just their second home appearance of the season.

First-year forward Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) added 12 points and six rebounds, all off the offensive glass, while first-year guard sophomore forward Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) scored 10 with five rebounds for the Bobcats.

Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored nine points for Bates, all on 3-pointers, and dished out a game-high eight assists. First-year guard Jackie Powers (Andover, Mass.) and junior guard Maggie Fitzgerald (Wethersfield, Conn.) each also scored nine points.

Simmons' third straight loss dropped the visiting Sharks to 4-7. Senior Jen Caron (Goffstown, N.H.) scored a game-high 22 points for Simmons to go with six rebounds, while junior Kristen Lucek (Wilmont, N.H.) added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Both teams played a frenetic trapping and full-court pressing approach to start the game, resulting in a slew of turnovers (17 for Simmons, 11 for Bates) and fouls (12 for Simmons, 15 for Bates). The Bobcats were able to pull away during the second period, propelled by Coffin's 11 points.

The Bobcats outrebounded the Sharks 45-34, including 19 offensive boards. Bates committed 21 turnovers but forced Simmons into 28 giveaways.

Kristen Fucarile and Sarah Roberts each scored seven points for the Sharks.

Bates plays host to Bowdoin on Jan. 13 in its first NESCAC league game of the season. Simmons hosts Worcester State on Saturday afternoon.
