NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Neither team could best the other in a battle of two high-quality NESCAC men's soccer teams Saturday, as Bates and Wesleyan came to a 2-2 draw through two overtime periods at Connecticut College.

Bates (7-2-2, 3-2-2) took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but both were erased quickly by the host Cardinals (6-2-1, 3-2-1).

Senior forward Terence O'Connell (Greenwich, Conn.) tallied an unassisted goal, his team-high ninth of the season, at the 42-minute mark. But Wesleyan's Justin Mello evened the score five minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal, his first of the year.

Bates sophomore midfielder Duane Pelz (Boulder, Colo.) notched his third goal this season at the 65-minute mark, another unassisted score. But only a minute later, Wesleyan struck back, as Mello's long throw-in was headed by Matt Nevin to Morgan Owen, who nudged the ball past Bates goalkeeper Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.).

Schleicher had eight saves in 110 minutes of action, while Matt Gnall had five for Wesleyan, which outshot Bates 16-9 and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Bates will host Plymouth State on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
