Bates Explodes for Nine-Goal First Quarter in 20-7 Victory vs. UMass Dartmouth

LEWISTON, Maine — Fourteen different players scored as the Bates College women's lacrosse team powered past UMass Dartmouth, 20-7, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

The Bobcats broke open a tight early contest with a dominant first quarter, scoring nine times in the opening 15 minutes to seize control of the game. Bates ultimately placed 24 shots on goal and held advantages in ground balls (28-19) and draw controls (16-13) in the victory.

After the Corsairs grabbed a brief 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter, Bates responded with an eight-goal surge to close the period. Goals from Haley Wines, Lauren Wong, Lucy Taylor, and Sarah Stavrovich highlighted the run as the Bobcats raced to a 9-2 advantage after one.

The Bobcats continued to add to the margin in the second quarter, pushing the lead to 13-4 by halftime. Grace Cassin scored while Bates was a player down, and Zoe Schaedle and Lucy Winthrop both tallied their first goals of the season during the frame.

Bates maintained control in the second half, with Frankie Franz scoring twice early in the third quarter to extend the lead to 15-4. The Bobcats carried a 17-5 advantage into the fourth quarter before late goals from Megan McPoland, Peyton Burg, and Amanda Edge capped the scoring.

Franz led the Bobcats with five points on two goals and three assists, while Lucy Taylor recorded four points with a goal and three assists.

Virginia Avery earned the win in goal for Bates after making three saves in the first half, while Molly Urbonas stopped one shot over the final 30 minutes.

The Bobcats return to NESCAC play on Saturday when they host four-time defending national champion and top-ranked Middlebury at Garcelon Field. Opening draw is scheduled for noon.
