Bobcats Push No. 1 Middlebury to the Brink in 11–8 Women's Lacrosse Battle

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates went punch-for-punch with the top-ranked team in the nation for 60 minutes Saturday afternoon, rallying within a goal in the fourth quarter before No. 1 Middlebury used a late response to escape Garcelon Field with an 11–8 victory.

Middlebury struck first with a pair of early goals from leading-scorer Haley Hamilton (Hamilton, Mass.), but Bates responded immediately, capitalizing on back-to-back player-up opportunities. Clare McGeever and Laci Raveis converted in quick succession to even the score at 2–2 midway through the first quarter (8:02), setting the tone for a back-and-forth battle.

The Panthers regained control late in the opening frame and carried that momentum into the second, building a 6–2 advantage. But again, Bates answered. Lauren Wong finished off a feed from Raveis with 4:46 to go in the first half, and Caroline Keating followed with a free-position goal (2:01) to pull the Bobcats back within two. Even after Middlebury scored in the final minute of the half, Bates had trimmed the deficit to 7–4 at the break and kept the pressure squarely on the reigning national champions.

The third quarter brought another surge.

Keating opened the half with her second free-position tally, and after trading goals, Wong struck again on a player-up opportunity to make it a one-goal game at 7–6. The Bobcats had fully flipped the momentum, stringing together stops and possessions while forcing Middlebury into uncomfortable stretches.

But every time Bates threatened, the Panthers had an answer.

A late third-quarter push gave Middlebury a 9–6 edge entering the fourth, yet the Bobcats refused to fade. Samantha Collins opened the final period (9:46) scoring her eighth of the season, and moments later Keating buried her third goal of the afternoon—another free-position finish—to pull Bates within 9–8 with more than eight minutes to play (8:23).

The upset was within reach for the home team, but that's when the top-ranked Panthers showed their composure.

Middlebury (7-0, 4-0 NESCAC) responded with a player-up goal from Caroline Adams (Norwich, Vt.) with 6:16 left to halt the momentum. The senior added an insurance tally at the 1:12 mark to create separation, ultimately sealing the 11–8 result.

Keating led the Bobcats with a hat trick, converting all three of her free-position attempts, while Wong added two goals and Raveis contributed a goal and two assists. Bates also held its own in the physical battle, finishing with a 21–17 edge in ground balls. Virginia Avery, Amanda Edge, and Raveis gathered four grounders apiece.

Adams topped the victors with her six points (four goals, two assists) while Hamilton matched her teammate with four tallies for her own.

The aforementioned Avery collected six saves in frame for the garnet and white. Elizabeth Savage (Portsmouth, R.I.) added four of her own in 60:00 for the Panthers.

Bates (3-5, 0-4 NESCAC) returns to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. with a road trip to Plymouth State.
