Bates Opens 2026 Season with Softball Split in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Bates softball team opened its 2026 campaign Sunday with a split in Florida, pulling away late for an 8–2 win over Alverno College before dropping a 5–0 decision to UMass Dartmouth.

GAME ONE
Bates broke open a tight game with a five-run sixth inning to defeat Alverno, 8–2, Sunday morning in the Bobcats' season opener.

The garnet-and-white collected 12 hits in the contest, with seven different Bobcats recording at least one knock. 2B Maddy Miller provided the biggest swing of the game, launching a three-run home run to center field in the sixth inning that turned a 1–1 game into a 4–1 Bates advantage. The dinger marked the first of the sophomore's collegiate career.

The Bobcats trailed 1–0 through five innings before the offense erupted in the sixth. C Isabel Bettencourt ignited the rally with a leadoff double, and CF Zariya Anderson followed with an RBI single to tie the game. After 1B Sophie Garber singled, Miller delivered her three-run blast to give Bates control at 4–1. Later in the inning, DP Paige Schedler and SS Ella Maher added singles, with Maher driving in a run to cap the five-run frame.

Bates added three more runs in the seventh to pad the lead. Bettencourt doubled again to start the inning and later scored on a RBI groundout from LF Sienna Pietrasiewicz. Garber drove in another run with an RBI single, and Miller reached on an error that allowed Anderson to score to make it 8–2.

Bettencourt led the Bobcats offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Anderson, Garber, and 3B Emma Yen each recorded two hits.

In the circle, Claire Ballard earned the win in her collegiate debut, tossing a complete game. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out three and walking five over seven innings.

GAME TWO
UMass Dartmouth scored in the opening inning and added insurance runs in the second and fifth to defeat Bates, 5–0, in the nightcap.

The Corsairs (4–0) capitalized early, pushing across an unearned run in the top of the first before adding two more tallies in the second inning to build a 3–0 advantage. UMass Dartmouth extended the lead in the fifth when C Lena Tsonis delivered a two-run double to right-center, making it 5–0.

Bates (1–1) managed four hits in the contest, with Garber leading the way by going 2-for-3, including a double. Pietrasiewicz and Miller also recorded singles for the Bobcats.

Delaney Rankin (0-1) took the loss in the circle for Bates, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out five (two walks) over 5.1 innings of work. Isabella Albro provided solid relief, tossing the final 1.2 innings and holding the Corsairs hitless while striking out one.

The Bobcats return to the diamond Monday with contests vs. Manchester University (Ind.) at 10:00 a.m., followed by a meeting vs. SUNY Cortand at 2:30 p.m.
