LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's swimming and diving team made a big statement on Friday, as they outscored No. 20 nationally ranked Gettysburg by a count of 181-81 in a dual meet at Tarbell Pool. Meanwhile, the Bates women's swimming and diving team came up short against the No. 18 nationally ranked Bullets, falling 160-102.
Men's Highlights
- The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), senior captain Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), sophomore Nate Oppenheim (Easton, Conn.), and senior captain Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) set a Tarbell Pool record with their winning time of 1:30.28. The Bobcats took the top two spots in the race as the 'B' team of seniors Kyle Beebe (Chatham, N.J.), Kailer Tom (Daly City, Calif.), Trent Hieber (Granby, Conn.), and Nate Pierce (Fairfield, Maine) touched the wall in 1:35.17, just ahead of the Gettysburg 'A' team, who finished in 1:35.58.
- Junior John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.46 and the 100-yard freestyle in 46.37 seconds.
- Johnson won the 50-yard backstroke in 24.08 seconds, the 100-yard backstroke in 51.17 seconds, and the 200-yard IM in 1:57.90.
- Somridhivej, Tom, and junior Noah Katz (Hallowell, Maine) took the top three spots in both the 50-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard breaststroke, with Somridhivej winning the 50 breast in 25.63 seconds and the 100 breast in 55.69 seconds.
- Oppenheim and sophomore Xander Theodos (Saint Louis, Mo.) placed 1-2 in the 100-yard butterfly, with Oppenheim winning in 50.24.
- Cory won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.38 seconds and the 50-yard butterfly in 22.63 seconds.
- Junior Liam Friedlander (Pittsburgh) won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.16.
- Pierce, Cory, Weigel, and Somridhivej closed out the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:23.46.
Women's Highlights
- First-year Grace Knight-Meister (Fort Collins, Colo.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:04.87.
- Junior Cora Zuwallack (East Falmouth, Mass.) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.45 and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.48.
- Junior Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine) set a Tarbell Pool record in the 50-yard breaststroke with her winning time of 29.94 seconds. She also won the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:04.75.
- Sophomore Erin Barisonek (New Vernon, N.J.) took second in the 50-yard backstroke in 28.02 seconds and was also the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.61.
- Seniors Emma Burke (New Hartford, N.Y.) and McKayla Kendall (Bangor, Maine) went 2-3 in the 100-yard butterfly, with Burke touching the wall in 59.50 seconds. Then Kendall took second in the 50-yard butterfly in 26.31 seconds, with Burke third in 26.92 seconds.
- Senior captain Lianna Rosman (Bethesda, Md.) was the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 25.67 seconds.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday morning when they visit Middlebury for a dual meet that gets underway at 11:00.
