AMHERST, Mass. -- Amherst College struck twice in the opening 12 minutes and held on for a 2-0 victory over Bates College in women's soccer conference play Saturday afternoon.
Sophia Haynes put the Mammoths on the board just 4:38 into the match, and Caroline Coletti doubled the lead less than seven minutes later at the 11:31 mark. The early goals proved to be all Amherst needed.
The Mammoths (6-1-1, 2-1-1 NESCAC) controlled the pace throughout, holding an 18-4 advantage in total shots and a 10-1 edge on target. Goalkeepers Sydney Litney Jr.) and first-year Brady Jacobson split time in net, both recording four saves each.
Bates (3-2-2, 0-2-1 NESCAC) returns home next Saturday in search of its first conference win, hosting No. 18 Williams at 11 a.m. on Russell Street Field as part of Back to Bates weekend.
