BANGOR, Maine -- Husson University pitching stymied the bats of Bates College Tuesday as the host-Eagles blanked the Bobcats, 1-0 and 6-0, for a non-conference softball sweep.
GAME ONE
It was a pitcher's duel from the jump in the opener as junior ace
Delaney Rankin delivered her 13th complete game of the season for the Bobcats, scattering just five hits (two walks) and one earned run while striking out four. Rankin (9-4) worked efficiently, keeping Husson off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth, when a solo home run by catcher Bulla McCabe provided the game's lone run.
Bates' offense was stymied by Husson's Sky Johnson (9-3), who authored a complete game one-hitter (six K's). The only hit of the contest came off the bat of sophomore CFÂ
Zariya Anderson, who singled to center in the opening frame.Â
Johnson retired 19 in a row after Anderson's first-inning knock.
GAME TWO
Husson's Ana Lang (5-3) scattered six hits, striking out nine and working around three walks, en route to the Eagles' second complete-game shutout of the afternoon.
The Eagles (17–9) broke through in the second inning on a two-run homer to center from catcher Morgan Tainter. The home team added a third run in the third when speedster CF Camryn King, walked, stole second, and advanced two bases on a wild pitch to score.
A tight game unraveled in the sixth as Husson plated three more runs, aided by a pair of walks, a hit batter, and a throwing error on a two-run single from Lydia Rice that cleared the bases and capped the scoring.
Haley Alden (2-3) started and went two innings for the Bobcats, allowing two earned runs on two hits.
Isabella Albro worked the final four, surrendering three earned while striking out one and walking five.
C
Isabel Bettencourt (2-for-3) and RF
Emily Kennedy (2-for-2, BB)Â each collected a pair of hits for the garnet and white.Â
Bates (14-12) now heads to Babson College this Thursday (3:00 p.m.) for a second-consecutive non-conference twin-bill.
