Bobcats Squeeze Out Extra-Inning Victory in Opener at Babson

Host-Beavers Hold Bates Hitless in 3-0 Nightcap

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College and Bates each earned a victory in a non-conference softball twin-bill Thursday as the Bobcats took the opener 2-1 in nine innings before the host-Beavers responded with a 3-0 win in the nightcap behind a no-hitter from Cameron Whiteford (Gr.).

GAME ONE

Bates broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth on a bunt single by CF Zariya Anderson, scoring automatic runner Emma Yen, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by SS Ella Maher

Babson had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single from RF Sara Moore. Bates had initially taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame on a sacrifice fly by DP Maya Lee.

Delaney Rankin went all nine frames for the Bobcats, allowing five hits and one unearned run while striking out four. Now 10-4 on the season, the junior ace lowered her earned-run average to a minuscule 1.21 in 14 starts (14 complete games).

Moira O'Reilly (6-5) took the loss for Babson despite giving up only two hits and no earned runs over nine innings, striking out 10.

GAME TWO

In the second game, Whiteford threw a seven-inning no-hitter, striking out 10 and walking two. The only run Babson (19-11) needed came in the third when 1B Charlotte Raymond clubbed a solo home run. Moore accounted for the two remaining runs in the sixth with a ribbie two-run single to center.

Haley Alden (2-4) suffered the loss in the circle for Bates (3.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R).

The Bobcats (15-13) return to NESCAC play Friday as the garnet and white prepares to host rival-Bowdoin (14-16) at 2:30 p.m. for a pair of games on Lafayette Street Field.
