LEWISTON, Maine -- Four different Bobcats found the back of the cage and the No. 6 nationally ranked Bates field hockey team made the most of Senior Day on Saturday, defeating Connecticut College 4-0 at Campus Ave. Field in NESCAC action.
Before the win, the Bobcats (11-2, 6-2 NESCAC) celebrated seniors
Summer Gordon (North Andover, Mass.),
Emma Queen (Pittsburgh, Pa.),
Lucy Norris (Chicago, Ill.),
Brooke Moloney-Kolenberg (Winchester, Mass.),
Eva Boucher (Boston), and
Kaili Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.), the first Bates field hockey senior class to post four straight winning seasons since the class of 1986.
Saturday's game was one of the team's best performances yet, as Bates grabbed the lead in the sixth minute of action against the Camels (5-7, 1-7 NESCAC) and did not look back from there.
The Bobcats earned a penalty corner and sophomore
Caroline Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) delivered the insert to Moloney-Kolenberg at the top of the circle. She passed the ball to her left to junior
Amy LaBelle (Barrington, R.I.) and LaBelle fired a ball towards the cage that sophomore
Elsa Copeland (Toronto, Ontario) quickly tipped to Nowak, who was almost parallel to the goal. Nowak deflected the ball to her left, off a stick of a Camel, and across the line for her third tally of the season.
Up 1-0 at halftime, Bates added to the lead with a pair of goals in the third quarter. In the 38th minute, first-year
Ciara Geraghty (Newburyport, Mass.) took the ball down the right side and delivered a perfect pass into the circle that sophomore
Lilly Hogan (Westport, Conn.) one-timed home for her third goal of the season. It's Geraghty's first collegiate assist.
A great individual effort from Copeland resulted in the third goal of the game for the Bobcats. In the 45th minute, junior
Elena Agosti (North Andover, Mass.) cleared the ball out of the Bates zone and Copeland did the rest. She took the ball just before midfield and raced towards the goal, speeding by multiple Camel defenders before taking on Conn. College keeper Isabella Carnall and winning. She was able to score her fifth goal of the season despite colliding with Carnall as she shot the ball, putting the Bobcats up 3-0.
Fittingly, a senior capped off the scoring on Senior Day for the Bobcats. In the 49th minute, Copeland got the ball to the goal line before turning and firing a pass back to Moloney-Kolenberg. The team captain made one move and ripped a shot home for her team-leading eighth goal of the year. It was Copeland's second assist of the game and fifth of the season.
Sophomore
Ava Donohue (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. ) played 45 minutes in goal and made a pair of saves for Bates as the Bobcats recorded their fifth shutout of the season and second in NESCAC play. Jacobsen played the 15 minutes and did not have to make a save. First-year
Ameera Dhillon (Surrey, British Columbia) made a defensive save in the 60th minute to preserve the shutout.
Carnall made four saves for the Camels.
The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday when they travel to defending NCAA Division III Champion and No. 7 nationally ranked Middlebury (9-4, 5-3 NESCAC). The game gets underway at 11 a.m.
