LEWISTON, Maine -- A Riley Priddy (Garrison, N.Y.) goal just 1:54 into Saturday's men's soccer showdown between #25 Amherst and Bates College would hold up the rest of the way as the Mammoths escaped Lewiston Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 NESCAC triumph.
An Amherst cross was headed away by a Bates defender, who proceeded to inadvertently tee up an unmarked Priddy as the sophomore fired home an uncontested blast from the center of the penalty box arc, putting the visitors ahead with what would be the eventual game-winner.
The Mammoths (4-1-2, 2-1-1 NESCAC) would finish the match by doubling up the Bobcats in the shot column, 14-7, but it would be Bates that owned the advantage at the conclusion of the first half, 5-4.
Wilson Smith paced the home team's offensive attack with four shots (2 SOG) in 57 minutes of action.
Trey Sheppard gathered three saves in 90:00 to earn the goalkeeping victory for Amherst.
George Nassar tallied four denials of his own in a complete-game effort for the Bobcats (5-2-1, 2-1-1 NESCAC).
The garnet and white will now prepare to host the University of Maine-Farmington this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. under the lights of Russell Street Track & Field.
