LEWISTON, Maine -- Experiencing the brand-new artificial surface of Russell Street Track & Field for the very first time Monday night, Bates College women's soccer made the most of the occasion by collecting its fourth shutout of the season, a 2-0 defeat of visiting Maine Maritime Academy, as the Bobcats move to 4-1-1 on the year.
The garnet and white opened the scoring at the 14:28 mark of the first half as a
Mollie Franklin pass from midfield hit teammate
Eleanor Martin in stride at the MMA 18-yard line, who promptly one-timed home her second goal of the season.
Bates' second tally of the contest arrived in the 37th minute (26:24).
Abby Alter lofted a feed from the right side, resulting in a scrum in front of the Mariners' frame. With the ball last touching
Hannah Ribeiro,
Olivia Becker uncorked a screamer that found the back of net, resulting in the sophomore's first score of the season.
The Bobcats finished the night with a 21-11 cushion in the shot column, including a 7-5 edging on target.
Starting goalkeeper,
Sydney Litney, earned the win after completing 45:00 minutes of action (two saves).
Samantha Bunar helped secure the combined shutout with three saves in her second-half performance for the Bobcats.
Maine Maritime drops to 3-3-1 with the setback.
Now looking ahead to Saturday, the Bobcats prepare to welcome #2 Amherst College for a mighty NESCAC tilt. The showdown will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Russell Street.
