AMHERST, Mass. -- An 8-0 run overlapping the second and third quarters by Amherst College proved to be the beginning of the end for visiting Bates as the #16 Mammoths doubled up the visiting Bobcats, 18-9, Saturday in NESCAC men's lacrosse action.
After
TJ Underhill's 17th goal of the season cut Bates' deficit to 8-6 at the 10:36 mark of the second, Bennett Chow's tally at 8:35 of the period ignited an offensive spurt for the Mammoths that would finally conclude late in the third quarter (2:37), courtesy of Alex Giacobbe's 28th of the year (third of game).
With Amherst (8-3, 5-2 NESCAC) now owning a comfortable 16-6 advantage, the Bobcats would net three of the game's final five scoring efforts, but to no avail.
The aforementioned Giacobbe finished the afternoon with seven points (four assists) for the victors. Bob Gross added seven of his own with six goals and a helper. Jake Bennett followed with a tally and five assists. Nicholas Kopp topped the team with eight ground balls, and secured 16-of-25 face-off attempts.
Gray Doyle,
Wil Masterson, and Underhill each had two goals apiece for the garnet and white.
Aidan Cunningham, in his first start of the season, contributed a goal, three grounders, and a team-high three caused turnovers.
Brooks Catlin, in 54:55 of action (8 GA, 13 saves), collected the goalkeeping victory for Amherst.
Andrew Toland, recording 13 saves of his own (45:00), suffered the defeat for Bates.
The Bobcats (3-10, 0-9 NESCAC) conclude the 2024 regular season on Wednesday, Apr. 24 at Colby College. Face-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
